Learning guide
Choosing age-appropriate learning resources
Age ranges are a helpful starting point, but children develop at different rates. The best resource is one that matches what your child can do now, with a little stretch.
Use age as a guide, then look at the skills
Every Talewhim resource lists the ages it suits and what children practise. Read the practice list and ask: can my child already do some of this, and is there something new to learn?
Signs a resource is about right
Your child can do most of a page with a little help, and finishes feeling they achieved something.
- Too easy: they rush through without thinking and lose interest.
- Too hard: they get upset, guess, or need you to do most of it.
- About right: they concentrate, make the odd mistake and can correct it with a hint.
Move at their pace
It's fine to go back to an earlier stage for confidence, or to repeat pages. Printable resources make this easy: print a page again rather than moving on before your child is ready.
If your child's teacher has mentioned what they are working on, choose resources that practise the same thing.
Browse resources for Ages 4–5, Ages 5–7, Ages 7–9 and Ages 7–10.
This guide is general information for parents and educators. If you're concerned about your child's progress, their teacher is the best person to talk to.
