Family Learning

Practical ideas for learning together at home: simple routines, activities to do side by side, reading practice, and helping children work on their own without pressure.

Simple home-learning routines

  • Pick a short, regular slot when your child is rested, such as ten to fifteen minutes after breakfast at the weekend or a little while after school.
  • Keep pencils, crayons and printed pages together in one box, so you can start straight away.
  • Finish while it's still going well, ideally with something your child finds easy.

Activities to do together

  • Sit alongside your child for the first few pages of anything new: read the instructions aloud and do the first example together.
  • Turn everyday moments into practice: spot letters on signs, count stairs, or play I spy with sounds.
  • Let your child explain what they did. Talking it through is part of learning.

Practising reading

  • Keep reading aloud to your child, even once they can read. Choose books they enjoy and chat about the story.
  • When they read to you, choose words they can sound out, and give them time before stepping in.
  • Re-reading a favourite book is good practice.

Encouraging independent learning

  • Once an activity is familiar, step back a little: stay nearby, but let your child try first.
  • Clear, uncluttered pages help children work out what to do on their own.
  • Praise effort and concentration, not just right answers.

Support without pressure

  • Children learn at different rates. Use age ranges as a guide, and follow your child's pace.
  • If they're tired, upset or simply not interested today, stop and try another day. Read to them instead.
  • Going back to something easier for confidence is fine. Printables make it easy to repeat a page.
